Royal Johannesburg Golf Club was founded in November 1890. Following a visit by the Prince of Wales the "prefix" Royal was granted to the club by George V in 1931.

Recently the Kensington Golf Club has merged with the Royal Johannesburg to form the current Royal Johannesburg Golf Club. Although the club still runs under the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club Banner.

The Royal Johannesburg Golf Club was recently voted in the Top 50 Courses in South Africa by Golf Digest SA. The West Course is a 6416 metre Par 72 course, and the East Course is a 6360 metre Par 72

Both East and West courses at Royal Johannesburg Golf Club have recently been improved. The East Course was originally designed by the famous professional Robert Grimsdell.
